Welcome to the East Midlands Geological Society
The East Midlands Geological Society was formed in 1964 by a group of professional and amateur enthusiasts, who recognized the need for such a group in this region of great geological interest. This mix of people from all backgrounds has remained a feature of the Society to this day and gives it a friendly relaxed atmosphere that appeals to newcomers. We are based in Nottingham, are affiliated to the Geologists’ Association, and maintain strong links with other geological societies and with the British Geological Survey at Keyworth.
The Society is open to all and welcomes new members with:
- Seven lectures each year on a wide range of geological topics, pitched to appeal to both professional and public audiences
- Six field trips each year, led by experienced and knowledgeable professional and amateur geologists, including a weekend/two day excursion, day trips and afternoon/evening walks
- A printed copy of Mercian Geologist, our scientific journal, published in the autumn each year with a range of content including peer-reviewed scientific papers, topical geology articles, book reviews, field trip reports and regional geology news
- The EMGS Circular, a regular newsletter with updates on Society events and news for members
- News and information on geological events in the region including lectures, field trips and conferences held by other societies
While the main activities of the Society are aimed at furthering interest in geology, the social side includes a Christmas buffet after the December meeting and also an annual dinner. The Society holds its indoor meetings at Nottingham University, to which we remain indebted for the use of their lecture theatre in the School of Geography. The East Midlands Geological Society is open to all, and we maintain interests and links with local geology and also with the wider geological sciences; new members are always welcome.
East Midlands Geological Society is a registered charity in England and Wales, number 503617. We are governed by an elected Council of volunteers from a range of backgrounds that reflect the interests and experience of Society members. View our Privacy and Cookies Policy
